INTERNET AND PRIVACY (CYBER CRIME)


Internet: It is a globalnetwork connecting millions of computers around the world in the exchange of data.

History of the internet:
  •  In the late 1960’s the internet was also known as the ARPANET.
  •   J.C.R. Licklider of the MIT was the first to proposed the global network of computers in the year 1962.
  •   In the year 1969, internet connection was first used by the military during the Cold War period by the Americans.


The first internet worm was unleashed by Robert Morris in the year 1988, which affected about 6000 computers.

PRIVACY: It comes from a Latin word “privatus which means being separated from the rest, or deprived of something.

What is Internet Privacy?

It is the ability to control whatever information one reveals about himself over the internet and to control who can access to that information.
Internet privacy is nothing but it is one’s restriction not to let others know of what he/she is doing in the internet.

Internet privacy and Cookies:

Cookies are small text files placed in the hard drive with a webpage. It is usually the users identification card. It makes it very easy for anyone to check your history of websites visited by you with the helped of the cookies stored in the hard drive of your machine.
Cookies started receiving tremendous media attention back in the year 2000 because of privacy concern.

CYBER CRIME: Cyber crimes are those crimes committed through the internet. For e.g. Hacking, posting of unwanted materials on the web, theft,etc.

 There has been case studies on the cyber crimes which are committed through the internet in so many different ways. Cases exists, where even people who understands the complication of doing  such an act would bring unwanted consequences, but they still practice it.

For e.g., A serving army officer was caught for uploading child pornography content on the websites. Jagmohan Balbir Singh, 42 is still in police custody for further investigation whether he is involved in producing the pornographic videos too. The colonel was arrested from his residence on May 7,2010.
“On questioning, Singh admitted that he had been uploading and downloading child pornographic videos and pictures on and from websites,’’

 Himanshu Roy, the Joint commissioner of police (crime) Mumbai, said. 

There are many other kinds of cyber crimes existing in the world of internet. Some of the examples can be hacking into important data or information which is stored in the computer system or network. 

Another such example was in the year 2008, when the Chinese government denied that they hacked into the system of the ministry of external affairs of India. The hackers are believed to have got away with sensitive data.

There are no such rules or laws to guide internet privacy existing. Anyone can do anything they want to do, be it for academic, business or entertainment purpose they can have access to the net freely without any restrictions.
